Summer camp is an excellent way for children to spend their summer vacation. It provides them with a chance to learn new things, make new friends, and enjoy fun outdoor activities. Parents often struggle with finding the right childcare solution for their children during the summer months. One option that parents should consider is sending their children to summer camp instead of hiring a babysitter. In this blog post, we will explore the reasons why summer camp is better than a babysitter.

Firstly, summer camp is an excellent opportunity for children to learn new skills and develop new interests. Summer camps offer a diverse range of activities such as swimming, rock climbing, archery, and horseback riding. These activities can help children develop their physical skills, social skills, and self-confidence. Children also have the opportunity to learn new hobbies and interests such as music, art, and coding. Summer camps offer specialized programs that cater to different interests, so children can find a program that suits their passions.

On the other hand, a babysitter may not be able to offer the same level of learning opportunities. A babysitter may be able to look after the child, but they may not have the skills or resources to provide educational activities or outdoor adventures.

Secondly, summer camp provides children with the opportunity to make new friends and socialize with other children. At summer camp, children are placed in groups with other children around their age. They spend a significant amount of time with their group engaging in activities and building friendships. These friendships can last a lifetime, and the social skills that children develop at summer camp can benefit them in their future interactions with others.

In contrast, a babysitter may provide one-on-one attention, but they may not be able to offer the same level of socialization that children can experience at summer camp. A babysitter may not have other children around for the child to interact with and may not be able to facilitate social activities.

Thirdly, summer camp provides children with a sense of independence and responsibility. Children are given opportunities to make decisions, solve problems, and take responsibility for their actions. They learn to be self-sufficient and develop a sense of pride in their accomplishments. These skills can help prepare children for their future and build their self-esteem.

On the other hand, a babysitter may not be able to provide the same level of responsibility and independence that children can experience at summer camp. A babysitter may be more focused on keeping the child safe and entertained, rather than teaching them important life skills.

Lastly, summer camp provides parents with peace of mind. Summer camps are run by trained professionals who are equipped to handle emergencies and ensure the safety of all children. Parents can feel confident that their children are in good hands and are being well taken care of. Summer camps also provide regular updates and communication with parents, so they can stay informed about their child’s activities and progress.

A babysitter, on the other hand, may not have the same level of training or experience as summer camp staff. Parents may be left feeling unsure about the quality of care their child is receiving and may not be able to get regular updates or feedback.

In conclusion, summer camp is a great alternative to hiring a babysitter for the summer. It provides children with opportunities to learn new skills, make new friends, develop a sense of independence, and gives parents peace of mind. While a babysitter may be a convenient option, it may not offer the same level of educational, social, and emotional benefits that summer camp can provide. Parents should consider the long-term benefits of summer camp when making childcare decisions for their children.

Spring is right around the corner and that means that it is time to choose a Summer Camp for your children.  Choosing a Summer Camp in a large city like Brooklyn, NY can be a daunting task!  The following are just a few things to look for:

  1. Is the camp licensed by the NYC Dept of Health?  This is a mandatory check that parent’s should do.  Any camp in NYC needs to be licensed and inspected.  These inspection reports can be found on the nyc.gov website and can give parent’s an insight to how the camp is run.
  2. Check the Summer Camp’s reviews and feedback from other parent’s.  Google pages, Facebook, Yelp and other platforms are a great place to start.  The best summer camps will have plenty of reviews online.
  3. Enriching Activities and Trips!  The best summer camps should have a robust program of activities and trips.  The activities should foster the camper’s creative, physical and social growth.  Trips should be to places that expose the campers to new things!  Look at the previous years trip calendar and program of activities to get a general idea of what to expect.
  4.  Take a tour!!  Go check out the summer camp.  See what the facility looks like and how you child will be spending his/her day!

3 Benefits of Summer Camp!

3 Benefits of Summer Camp!

Benefit 1

Summer camp gives children much needed exposure to the outdoors.  All school year children are cooped up in schools with very little time to play outdoors and maintain a healthy lifestyle.   Living in an urban environment like Brooklyn, NY there are not many accessible locations for children to explore.  The weather of NYC often leaves much of the year unusable to outdoor activities, therefore being part of a summer camp in Brooklyn, children are given the opportunity to get out and play while being properly supervised.

Benefit 2

Learn new things!  Summer camp gives children exposure to new skills and activities in a safe and non-judgmental environment.  We can all recall the first time we tried a new sport or tasted a new food.  This can be a very intimidating experience!  Being in summer camp, a child can do these thing among peers who are also experiencing them for the first time.  Summer camp counselors are trained to give enthusiasm, help and not to criticize.

Benefit 3

Make lifelong friends!  Our children look forward all year to be reunited with their camp friends.  The bonding experience during the summer is very profound because the campers are engaging in special activities, such as overnights or rock climbing along with their peers.  Do you still have a friend from summer camp?
